Minister Oliver Discusses the Growing Canada-European Union Energy Relationship

ID: 1224895

(firmenpresse) - BRUSSELS, BELGIUM -- (Marketwired) -- 05/08/13 -- The Honourable Joe Oliver, Canada's Minister of Natural Resources, issued this statement following his meeting with the European Commissioner for Energy, Gunther Oettinger:

"Commissioner Oettinger and I discussed a number of important subjects, including the European Commission's proposed Fuel Quality Directive and the growing trade between Canada and the European Union (EU).

"I took this opportunity to share our Government's views on the proposed Fuel Quality Directive directly with the European Commission.

"Canada supports measures designed to achieve real GHG reductions and would be happy to collaborate with the EU in developing such measures. We ask that the Fuel Quality Directive be fair and be based on science and the facts.

"I emphasized that oil sands crudes have a similar GHG intensity to other heavy crudes consumed in the EU. Any measure that targets the oil sands while ignoring these other crudes is unacceptable and all crudes must be treated based on actual GHG emissions.

"I also discussed the EU-Canada trade and investment relationship. A number of European companies have invested significantly in Canada's natural resource sectors. Canada and the European Union are negotiating a comprehensive economic and trade agreement that will take the Canada-EU trade relationship to new heights.

"The International Energy Agency forecasts that Europe's reliance on imported oil and gas will increase in the next 20 years. Its energy security interests are best served by ensuring that energy trade is open and free.

"I noted that Canada is a safe, secure and environmentally responsible energy producer that will make an important contribution to energy security in Europe and globally.

"Our Government's focus is jobs, economic growth and long-term prosperity. We are committed to working with our partners in the European Union to strengthen global energy markets and ensure strong stewardship of the environment."
