Sensiotec Names Dr. Richard Carmona, 17th U.S. Surgeon General, to Its Board of Advisors

ID: 1223576

(firmenpresse) - ATLANTA, GA -- (Marketwired) -- 05/06/13 -- Sensiotec Inc. announces a new addition to its Advisory Board: Richard H. Carmona, MD, MPH, FACS, the 17th Surgeon General of the United States; Vice Chairman of Canyon Ranch, a health and wellness company; and President of the non-profit Canyon Ranch Institute. Dr. Carmona is also a Distinguished Professor at the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health at the University of Arizona. Dr. Carmona will provide strategic counsel to the company on clinical, scientific and commercialization strategies.

"It is important to encourage the commercialization of disruptive medical device technologies like Sensiotec's Virtual Medical Assistant® that can help contain costs while improving quality of care," said Dr. Carmona. "I look forward to helping Sensiotec achieve its goals."

Born to a poor Hispanic family, Dr. Carmona enlisted in the U.S. Army after dropping out of high school, received an Army GED and trained as a Special Forces medic and weapons specialist. He is a combat decorated Vietnam veteran.

After leaving active duty, Dr. Carmona worked as a paramedic and Registered Nurse for several years while earning a BS and MD from the University of California, San Francisco and received the prestigious School of Medicine Gold-Headed Cane as the top graduate. He remained at UCSF to complete his residency in general and vascular surgery, is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and completed an NIH-sponsored fellowship in trauma, burns and critical care. Dr. Carmona also received an MPH from the University of Arizona.

Dr. Carmona is the founder and first director of Arizona's first regional trauma care system, Medical Director of Pima County Sheriff's Department, former Chairman of the Regional EMS System, County public health officer, and chief executive officer of the Pima County health care system. He is a fully qualified peace officer with SWAT and special operations expertise.

In 2002, the President nominated Dr. Carmona to become the 17th Surgeon General of the United States, the first health professional with nursing experience to serve in that capacity. The U.S. Senate unanimously confirmed his nomination and, as Surgeon General, Dr. Carmona focused on prevention, preparedness, health disparities, health literacy and global health.

"We are honored that Dr. Carmona has chosen to devote his time and energy to Sensiotec," said Robert Arkin, Sensiotec's founder and Chief Executive Officer. "His commitment to advancing the quality and effectiveness of the U.S. healthcare system aligns closely with our mission to maximize the use of disruptive noncontact sensing technology to dramatically improve the way we care for patients in hospitals, nursing homes and at home."

Sensiotec Inc., based at the Georgia Tech Venture Center, has developed the Virtual Medical Assistant® (VMA), a truly remote, totally noncontact (a/k/a standoff sensing), wireless, continuous cardiorespiratory monitor that evokes memories of Star Trek's Dr. McCoy. The VMA measures heart and respiration rates and movement, providing critical "spot" and "trend" data to a nurse's station, tablet, cell phone or pager, without the need for electrodes that touch the patient directly or indirectly, or pads that require contact with a mattress or other surface. The VMA is built on a dynamic, connected care platform that combines a point of care device, transmitting extremely low-power radio waves reflecting off the heart, lungs and torso, with Web-based server architecture. This platform permits an extraordinary level of usability, scalability, interoperability and affordability compared to conventional telemetry systems. The VMA is the only cardiorespiratory monitor with true noncontact technology to receive 510(k) Class II premarket clearance from the FDA. To learn more, visit .
