At the forum, John will discuss (1) the specific advantages of Micromidas' chemical process to make bio-based para-xylene, (2) which feedstocks have been tested and offer the most promise, (3) the comparative projected economics of the chemical process, and (4) the current scale and status of the technology.
Founded in 2008, Micromidas has developed a chemical process technology to make a variety of commodity chemicals from renewable cellulosic waste materials, such as post consumer paper, agricultural residues, wood chips and paper pulp. As a result, Micromidas' bio-based plastics do not negatively impact the global food supply. Additionally, Micromidas' process eliminates the use of crude oil to produce certain plastics. The first commodity chemical Micromidas will produce is para-xylene, a key feedstock to manufacture PET and polyester. PET is used in a variety of applications such as plastic beverage bottles and clam shells. Polyester is used to make textiles such as clothing and carpets.
