Designed by SmithGroupJJR, Is One of the Largest Medical Simulation Centers in U.S.

(firmenpresse) - PEORIA, IL -- (Marketwired) -- 05/01/13 -- The OSF Healthcare System and the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria (UICOMP) in collaboration have dedicated one of the nation's largest medical simulation centers in the U.S. Named the the $51 million, 177,450-square-foot building was designed by , one of the nation's leading architecture, engineering and planning firms.

The six-story facility is located on the downtown Peoria, Illinois campus of Saint Francis Medical Center, a major teaching affiliate of UICOMP. The Jump Trading Simulation and Education Center intends to improve patient care and safety while lowering healthcare costs through simulation training of medical professionals. It will also strive to reduce the time between innovation and adaptation of improved methods.

"It is time for a revolution in medical education. This facility will transform the way we train our physicians, caregivers, and first responders," said Dr. John Vozenilek, director of simulation and chief medical officer of the Jump Trading Simulation and Education Center.

Computer-based simulation complements traditional training by helping health professionals gain hands-on experience before performing procedures on real patients, whether in an operating room or a clinical setting. Each year over the next three years, the center is expected to provide 65,000 unique educational encounters.

The Jump Trading Simulation and Education Center covers 58,050-square-feet over two floors that will facilitate clinical training for physicians, nurses, health professionals, researchers and students. The first floor includes the education center with a 250-seat auditorium, 75-seat lecture hall, conference room, debriefing theater and small meeting spaces. Also housed on the first floor are an anatomical training lab, innovation lab, and a virtual reality center and skills lab. Second floor spaces include a virtual patient care unit, virtual intensive care unit, and a virtual surgery suite. The remaining four floors of the building consist of medical office space.

SmithGroupJJR's design complements the Saint Francis campus aesthetic through the use of a similar material palette of precast concrete, glass and limestone. The building creates an educational experience for nursing and medical students alike through precise simulation exercises that are achieved through the use of realistic clinical spaces and cutting-edge technologies embedded within the design of this facility.

"The Jump Trading Simulation and Education Center is a hospital and a stage set all in one. Front spaces are the virtual hospital with 100-percent fidelity to the clinical setting, while the spaces in back are a laboratory of technology, infrastructure, and classrooms that support the active learning environment," said Tim , design principal for the Chicago office of SmithGroupJJR.

The project is targeting LEED®-NC Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

Ground breaking for the project occurred in September 2011. Joining SmithGroupJJR on the design and construction team are Henneman Engineering, Shen Milsom & Wilke, Spellman Brady, Hitchcock Design, SpaceCo Inc., Code Consultants Inc., and Pepper-Mangieri Construction.
