(firmenpresse) - TEL AVIV, ISRAEL -- (Marketwired) -- 04/30/13 -- The Honourable Joe Oliver, Canada's Minister of Natural Resources, today delivered a keynote speech to Israeli business leaders as part of his economic mission to Israel.

While addressing energy industry leaders during a luncheon speech, Minister Oliver highlighted opportunities for collaboration between the two countries and stressed Canada's position as a global leader in the energy sector.

"On a number of fronts, Israel and Canada share tremendous opportunities to work together, share expertise and transfer technology," said Minister Oliver. "Canada is open for business, and we want to expand our trade and investment with Israel, creating jobs, growth and long-term prosperity for both countries."

Minister Oliver highlighted the recently announced call for research and development proposals under the Canada-Israel Energy Science and Technology Fund (CIESTF). In October 2012, Natural Resources Canada announced $5 million over the next three years through its ecoENERGY Innovation Initiative to support this fund, which will also receive funding from the Government of Israel on a project-by-project basis.

The creation of the CIESTF, managed and delivered by the Canada-Israel Industrial Research and Development Foundation, will see Canada and Israel pursue further cooperation to advance our shared energy interests.

"The Fund has been created to promote collaboration in developing innovative energy technologies," said Minister Oliver. "Canada and Israel both possess world-leading capabilities to improve sustainable development and environmental performance."

While in Israel, Minister Oliver, accompanied by a Canadian trade delegation, is meeting with leading Israeli business leaders and policy experts to further explore trade and investment opportunities between Canada and Israel. The Government of Canada is committed to strengthening bilateral ties with Israel, advancing Canada's energy interests and contributing to Canada's long-term economic well-being.
