(firmenpresse) - ALEXANDRIA, VA -- (Marketwired) -- 04/29/13 -- The fight to Stop Diabetes® is an enormous one: It means treating, preventing and ultimately curing the disease; raising awareness and funding for research; providing much-needed services and information; and advocating on behalf of those denied their rights because of diabetes. From supporting innovative research to defending the legal rights of workers with diabetes, the May issue of , the Healthy Living Magazine of the American Diabetes Association, describes the many ways people around the country are boldly striving to Stop Diabetes.

Grants allow a researcher to purchase laboratory equipment, employ support staff and students and buy other supplies necessary to carry out groundbreaking studies -- but the competition for government dollars can be brutal. This piece tells the stories of five researchers who received awards from the Association at critical moments in their careers and now work each day to improve the lives of people with diabetes.

Shane Siegel and James Allman-Gulino wanted nothing more than to serve as U.S. diplomats -- but they were both denied entry into the Foreign Service because of their type 1 diabetes, despite having excellent blood glucose control and surviving the agency's rigorous selection process. The magazine looks at how these men fought back with help from two of the Association's volunteer attorneys, demonstrating that diabetes doesn't have to interfere with the ability to do a job.

Not so long ago, the sight of a person standing at an office desk, instead of sitting, would have raised eyebrows. Now, there seems to be a legion of dedicated standers, and science may be on their side. Diabetes Forecast considers the evidence and offers six ways to sit less.
