Minister MacKay's Statement on the 200th Anniversary of the Battle of York
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 04/27/13 -- The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, issued the following statement today on the 200th Anniversary of the Battle of York.
"Today, more than 1 500 members of the Canadian Armed Forces marched through the streets of downtown Toronto to honour all those who fought, including those who died in the Battle of York.
"Two hundred years after the loss of the town of York in 1813, we recognize the strength of the historical ties between the Canadian Armed Forces and the city of Toronto.
"With Regimental Colours flying high and military music marking the pace, our sailors and soldiers marched from the steps of the Ontario Legislature to what is known now as the Fort York National Historic Site - two sites which were burned to the ground in 1813 and that now, rebuilt and thriving, welcome thousands of Canadians each year.
"On behalf of the Government of Canada, I wish to thank the City of Toronto for their partnership and dedication. Today's events were a great opportunity for Torontonians and all Canadians to learn more about a key chapter in the development of this city and our country.
"The 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 is an opportunity for all Canadians to take pride in our traditions, remember our shared history, and to commemorate the achievements of those early sailors and soldiers who fought in the War of 1812."
