This elegant green landscape was designed by Nicolo Tribolo, who happened to be the court architect of Cosimo I De Medici and was also responsible for the Boboli Gardens in Florence. The villa is also home to some fantastic exhibitions of portraits and modern art.
The Ethnobotanic Garden of Oaxaca, Mexico
For something completely different, the quirky landscape of these cactaceae and agaves gardens in Oaxaca are sure to provide some inspiration. The exotic plants - that represent the biodiversity of - look like they've come from another planet! Oaxaca is also home to the thickest tree on earth! The 2,000 year old swamp cypress is a must-see wonder of the natural world.
Alhambra Gardens, Spain
These late-medieval castle gardens stand on a stunning walled plateau. If you're thinking of including any Eastern Mediterranean elements to your garden designs, this is the place to see. It dates back to the 11th century and is often thought of as a work of art as much as a garden.
The Alhambra Palace is only around four and a half hours from Madrid so you could make it a day trip visit from a sunny city break to Spain's capital.
