Legion Selects Winners of Poster and Literary Contests

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 04/25/13 -- Mr. Gordon Moore, Dominion President of The Royal Canadian Legion, announced the winners of the Legion's Poster and Literary Contests today at Dominion Command.

"Since 1960, the Legion has been sponsoring Poster and Literary contests in its efforts to perpetuate Remembrance among all Canadians," said Gordon Moore. "This past year more than 100,000 primary, junior, intermediate and senior students rose to the challenge and participated in these national contests and I congratulate each of the participants and winners for their outstanding work and interest in Remembrance," stated Moore.

Participants represent youth from all areas of the country, in both official languages, and span the various cultural mixes that make up the family mosaic of Canada. "This is yet another example of an activity the Legion is proud to engage in on behalf of all Canadians and highlights the diversity of Legion activities in our communities," added Moore.

About the Poster and Literary Contests

The contests are divided into four categories:

The contests are organized by Legion branches with schools in their area and the winning entries progress through various levels at the Legion with the final entries being forwarded to Legion national headquarters in Ottawa where they are judged and the national winners declared.

Regarding the Literary Contest, participants are asked to submit an essay/composition or a poem with a Remembrance theme. Submissions are accepted in either French or English and are marked on the basis of originality of thought, expression, presentation, grammar and spelling.

The Poster Contest participants are asked to submit they work in either black & white or colour format with the theme of Remembrance and what it represents to them. Similar to the Literary Contest, submissions are marked based on originality, expression and presentation.





Plaques will be awarded to the national winners in each category and to the winners' schools. First place winners in the senior category will also win a trip for two to attend the National Remembrance Day Ceremony held in Ottawa on November 11th, 2013 where they will place a wreath on behalf of the Youth of Canada. They will also have an opportunity to visit and meet with the Governor General and others in the Vice-Regal Party during this visit.

The Senior winning entries in the Literary Contest will also be displayed at the Canadian War Museum between July 1st, 2013 and May 1st, 2014. The second place winners and any participant receiving an Honourable Mention will be displayed in the foyer of the House of Commons during the annual Remembrance Day period in November 2013.

Established in 1926, the Legion is the largest Veterans service organization in Canada with more than 320,000 members. Its mission is to serve all Veterans including serving Canadian Forces and Royal Canadian Mounted Police members and their families, to promote Remembrance and to serve our communities and our country.
