Media Advisory: European Court of Justice to Rule Today on Whether EU Seal Ban Must Be Scrapped, Amended or Upheld

The European Court of Justice will rule today on the legal basis of the implementing measures of the EU seal trade regulation. As part of the plea the court will also rule on the legal basis of the EU seal trade regulation itself.
IFAW and the millions of Europeans who campaigned to end the EU's role in the inherently cruel commercial seal hunt hope that the result will be positive. There are a number of possible outcomes of the court case. The legal challenge could be thrown out, the existing seal trade regulation could be annulled or the court could decide that either the seal trade regulation or the implementation regulation must be amended.
The court decision comes as the EU seal trade regulation is being challenged at the World Trade Organization (WTO). The second hearing is scheduled for April 29th and 30th, 2013 in Geneva. A final decision from the WTO is expected in October, 2013.
