Optimising control centres with KVM - onshore&offshore

(PresseBox) - Nor Shipping 2013, the maritime arena for strategic business transactions and networking will be the first Scandinavian trade show for Guntermann & Drunck. The German KVM pioneer will present its solutions for maritime IT applications at this year's Nor Shipping in Oslo, June 4-7.
Knowing what the market wants
Guntermann & Drunck looks back on 30 years of experience on the KVM market. The close cooperation with leading companies has resulted in various KVM products especially designed to be employed in extreme environments like on the high seas or in air traffic control.
KVM facilitates the controller's work on board or in control centres in the maritime sector. With KVM, IT installations can be operated and monitored from one central workstation.
"There are many parallels between shipping and air traffic control regarding quality, reliability and longevity", says Roland Ollek, Head of Sales and Marketing at Guntermann & Drunck. "That's why we work closely together with the leading companies of these two sectors when developing new products. As a result of our strategic alliances, our products are perfectly adjusted to individual application scenarios and cover any requirements."
Employing KVM optimises IT installations on- and offshore. Various kinds of applications have proven their worth in the maritime industry by
-? Removing computers into equipment rooms, away from the bridge, which creates more space and better working conditions for the crew as well as computers
-? Optimising control centres in shipping, on nautical bridges and for process control, e.g. on dredgers
-? Enabling access to remote computers in offshore control centres
KVM basics - Who? What? How?
Guntermann & Drunck (G&D) is a German manufacturer and supplier of KVM. KVM is a piece of hardware. It describes a technology rather than a particular trademark or company.
Originally, KVM was short for a technology to extend and/or switch the primary computer signals keyboard, video and mouse. Today, KVM extends and switches even more signals like DVI dual-link with up to 4k resolutions, single-link and analogue video, bidirectional audio, RS232 and USB transparent.

With the help of KVM, computers can be easily removed from the bridge or control centres to be stored in separate equipment rooms. Existing copper cables or optical fibres establish the connection back to the workstations. Now the computers can be maintained in the equipment room without disturbing the crew on the bridge or in the control room.
In contrast to networks, KVM products establish a direct connection to the computers and work without any additional software and independent from the operating system in use.
Always one step ahead
In addition to powerful products, Guntermann & Drunck's portfolio offers sophisticated functions and features, which, when combined, create a system with numerous finesses. Among them are special monitoring functions that become extremely important in mission-critical sectors. The monitoring features continuously check the status of the KVM devices as well as the status of the connected computers and peripherals.
This makes it easy for the IT staff to react to critical conditions (like increased temperatures, power issues, critical computer statuses, communication errors between interfaces or issues with the redundant system) before they lead to failures. Now the crew is always one step ahead of possible downtimes or bottlenecks in the system.
Users on all kinds of ships benefit from the flexibility and advantages of KVM systems as they are used on: cargo ships, dredgers, yachts, military ships, ice breakers, etc.
Big names trust in Guntermann & Drunck's products and services.
At this year's Nor Shipping, Guntermann & Drunck is looking forward to prove their core competencies to visitors at the German stand C01-01e or under http://maritime.gdsys.de
