ID: 1216260

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 04/15/13 -- A Task Force of 160 Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) personnel from across Canada with six CF-18 Hornets from Bagotville, Que., and supported by a CC-150 Polaris tanker from Trenton, Ont., completed their mission to Keflavik, Iceland today.

This deployment to patrol Iceland's airspace was the second under a CAF periodic initiative named Operation Ignition. The operation supports the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's (NATO) mission - Airborne Surveillance and Interception Capabilities to Meet Iceland's Peacetime Preparedness. The first deployment of NATO aircraft in support of NATO's Iceland mission took place in May 2008.

"The Canadian Armed Forces continue to demonstrate our commitment to NATO on land, in the air and on the seas. In this case specifically, our contribution of fighters highlights Canada's dedication to NATO security in the air." said Lieutenant-General Stu Beare, Commander Canadian Joint Operations Command. "I am extremely grateful to the Royal Canadian Air Force for leading this effort, to the people and Government of Iceland for being superb hosts, and to the team of Joint Operations Command for enabling the mission."

Over the course of the deployment, Task Force Iceland successfully completed 112 sorties in and around Icelandic airspace.

"Over the past month, a diverse group of Canadian Armed Forces personnel from all over Canada came together with a common purpose and outstanding mission focus," said Lieutenant-Colonel Darcy Molstad, Task Force Commander for Operation Ignition 2013. "The members of this Task Force performed with distinction. I am very proud of their accomplishments, and it is thanks to their hard work, dedication and professionalism, that I consider our mission a complete success."

Some aircraft and personnel returned to Canada over the weekend while the remainder will fly home over the coming days.
