Spike in Bird Flu Cases Could Indicate Pandemic Is Imminent; Bird Flu Now Spreading Throughout China
(firmenpresse) - LONG BEACH, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 04/14/13 -- AvianFluTalk.com, an online discussion forum created in 2005 to bring awareness of the threat of an avian flu pandemic, has announced that the new H7N9 bird flu virus is spreading in China and could be the next pandemic.
Scientists have warned that the new bird flu has now partially adapted to humans and has the likelihood of mutating eight times faster than other avian flu viruses seen in the past, such as H5N1. To date, there are 60 confirmed cases and 13 dead, with approximately 55 still hospitalized. The H7N9 virus is considered extremely virulent in humans.
"Although there is no evidence of sustained human-to-human transmission, there is in fact evidence of limited human-to-human transmission taking place, which indicates the virus is evolving and mutating rather quickly," said the owner and administrator of the online forum.
Many of the forum members are questioning the transparency of China Officials in reporting cases. China was heavily criticized for its handling of SARS in 2003, when officials initially covered up the disease and were slow to share information.
