Harper Government Invests in Improvements to Vancouver's Community Infrastructure
(firmenpresse) - VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- (Marketwired) -- 04/12/13 -- Today, Andrew Saxton, Parliamentary Secretary to the President of the Treasury Board and for Western Economic Diversification, and Member of Parliament for North Vancouver, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced support for the improvements to the H. R. MacMillan Space Centre Planetarium under the Harper Government's Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).
"By improving facilities such as Vancouver's H. R. MacMillan Space Centre Planetarium, we are helping to boost economic activity while improving local infrastructure," said Parliamentary Secretary Saxton. "With today's investment, our Government is demonstrating our commitment to creating jobs, growth and long-term economic prosperity."
The Harper Government's investment of $240,288 will support upgrades for the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre Planetarium, including the installation of a full-dome digital projection system. The Space Centre Society will also make necessary modifications to the electrical system and train employees on the new equipment. These improvements will enhance the services provided by the Planetarium and bring the facility up-to-date.
"The H.R. MacMillan Space Centre greatly appreciates this contribution from the federal government for our Planetarium renewal project," said Eric Pringle, Chair - Board of Directors. "As a community resource, we seek to evoke a sense of wonder and to inspire sustained interest in the fields of space science and astronomy from a Canadian perspective. This support will ensure that our visitors will have a continued and improved opportunity to explore the connections between science, culture and society."
In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced further support to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure. Our Government committed $150 million over two years for the Fund. The Fund supports projects that look to improve existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, cultural and other community facilities.
Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating small- and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
