Minister of State Goodyear Congratulates Canadian Researchers on Breakthrough in Malaria Treatment
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 04/11/13 -- Yesterday, an international team of researchers that included Canadian and American researchers published a paper describing how baker's yeast can be engineered to produce artemisinin-the key drug in the most effective treatment for malaria-on an industrial scale. This efficient, lower-cost process will help stabilize the global supply of artemisinin. On this occasion, the Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State (Science and Technology), made the following statement:
"On behalf of the Government of Canada, I wish to congratulate the team of experts at the University of Saskatchewan, the National Research Council of Canada and their international partners on this breakthrough in the treatment of malaria.
"Scientific research and the development of new products and processes such as this one are critical to strengthening Canada's position as a global innovation leader. This is another great example of how government, academia and industry work together on finding effective solutions to critical issues that benefit the world."
Malaria occurs in 99 countries, and 3.3 billion people are at risk of contracting this disease. The discovery announced yesterday will help create affordable therapies to reduce those numbers.
