Harper Government Supports Canadian Workers and Helps Replace Costly Foreign Oil

ID: 1215632

(firmenpresse) - MONTREAL, QUEBEC -- (Marketwired) -- 04/11/13 -- The Honourable Joe Oliver, Canada's Minister of Natural Resources, today visited Suncor Energy's Montreal refinery, where he highlighted how the plan for Responsible Resource Development supports workers across Canada, including in Quebec. The Harper Government's plans also help replace more expensive imported oil with cheaper Canadian oil for consumers and refineries in Quebec.

"Canada's abundant natural resources directly employ more than 178,000 people in Quebec, including over 400 workers at Suncor's Montreal refinery," said Minister Oliver. "With the development of new pipelines and delivery of the product to new markets, Canadian oil alone could support up to 11,000 jobs here in Quebec over the next 25 years - and could contribute, on average, $725 million annually to the province's GDP."

The Harper Government welcomes proposals for energy infrastructure, which are critical to jobs and economic growth. It keeps taxes low, introduces new environmental standards and strengthens relationships with new emerging markets, which would help make a pipeline to the East a reality.

"Subject to regulatory approval, our Government fully supports energy infrastructure projects that will transport Western Canadian oil to the East," said Minister Oliver. "It's in our national interest to replace higher-cost foreign crude with lower-cost Canadian crude for consumers and refineries in Quebec and the Maritime provinces."

The expansion and diversification of our energy markets are priorities for the Government of Canada. Our plan for Responsible Resource Development ensures that we develop our natural resources in an environmentally responsible manner. The Government of Canada is increasing the number of annual inspections by the National Energy Board for oil and gas pipelines by 50 percent, from 100 to 150 inspections a year and doubling, from three to six, the number of annual comprehensive audits to identify issues before incidents occur.

"Our Government is committed to supporting jobs, economic growth and long-term prosperity in Montreal and all of Quebec," said Minister Oliver.
