Driver to Be Criminally Charged for Bus Crash That Injured Anapol Schwartz Client
(firmenpresse) - PHILADELPHIA, PA -- (Marketwired) -- 04/11/13 -- The driver of the Calvary Coach bus that crashed into a Boston overpass and injured more than 30 high school students and chaperones in February is facing criminal and civil charges, Massachusetts State Police announced today.
Samuel J. Jackson is being charged with driving negligently to endanger and will receive civil violations for failing to heed a sign and driving a bus on a Department of Conservation and Recreation roadway where buses are not permitted.*
The police investigation into the indicated the bus did not slow down as it approached the low-clearance bridge. Three were hospitalized after the collision, and 17-year-old Matthew Cruz remains hospitalized after spinal surgery to fix fractured and shattered vertebrae and a number of subsequent medical conditions.
Attorneys Jim Ronca and Alan Schnoll, representing Cruz and his mother, are looking at the bigger picture. "While the state may punish Mr. Jackson, our purpose, in addition to finding compensation for Matt, is to find out why safety rules were violated, what breakdowns occurred in Mr. Jackson's training, whether more signs would have been helpful, whether the GPS should have alerted the driver, and whether a one day trip to Boston with one driver is a safe idea in the first place," said a statement issued by Ronca and Schnoll.
Cruz's mother, Megan Cruz, appreciates the "efforts of the police and the Boston prosecutor's office to pursue criminal charges against the driver of the Calvary Coach bus for contributing to a collision that so terribly injured my son Matt."
The students and chaperones were returning to Pennsylvania from a trip to Harvard University when it slammed into the Western Avenue Bridge. The impact of the collision crushed the bus's roof and prevented many from exiting the vehicle. Passengers were stranded on the bus for more than an hour in frigid weather before rescue crews could free them.
