High-tech on the high seas: STREICHER Drilling Technology realises its second offshore drilling rig for ARCHER
Deggendorf, April 2013 – STREICHER Drilling Technology’s offshore drilling rig VDD 400.1 has been operating successfully off the coast of New Zealand since the summer of last year. Its modular concept and high degree of automation are proving themselves on the high seas. Now the Norwegian company ARCHER has appointed STREICHER Drilling Technology to develop it further and to construct a second offshore rig. The VDD 400.2 is likely to be used for the decommissioning and sealing of existing bore holes in the Norwegian part of the North Sea.
(firmenpresse) - With the VDD 400.1, STREICHER Drilling Technology succeeded in constructing an offshore drilling rig which can be easily transported, erected and dismantled. The whole rig consists of modules none of which exceeds the weight limit of twelve tons. As a consequence, the erection and dismantling of the rig can be realised quickly and cost effectively using the respective drilling platform’s own crane. This makes the usual use of floating cranes superfluous. Modules requiring repair can be replaced as required. The VDD systems’ hydraulics not only make extremely precise steering possible but also allow high loads to be transferred despite the small size of their constructional elements. The VDD 400.2 is intended to follow the same concept.
Strictest criteria
The VDD 400.2 is constructed and accepted in accordance with the Norwegian safety standards NORSOK amongst others. These are considered to be the strictest in the world. STREICHER is again employing automation to ensure the safety of employees on the platform. As in all of STREICHER Drilling Technology’s on and offshore deep drilling systems, the pipe handler will operate fully automatically. The insertion and extraction of drilling rods, pipes and other drilling equipment is carried out at the touch of a button. In addition to making the work easier this leads above all to a huge improvement in occupational safety.
A system innovation: The pipe handling crane is partially automated. Space on Heimdal’s Statoil natural gas platform - its planned site of operations - is very limited and requires the highest precision in crane operation. In addition, the pipe handling crane of the VDD 400.2 will have almost double the capacity of its predecessor. While the latter had a maximum operating radius of 14 metres, the VDD 400.2 will have a radius of 21 metres. For safety reasons the different movement sequences of the pipe handling crane will partially automated.
Compact giant
For the first time STREICHER Drilling Technology is equipping an offshore drilling rig with a pipe deck for storing rods and pipes. The pipe deck will also be designed for modular construction. The 150 ton deck will be delivered as about 20 modules. Energy is supplied by the VDD 400.2 transformers instead of generators.
The rig is expected to be delivered in May 2014. It will decommission existing wells in the North Sea on the Norwegian energy corporation Statoil’s Heimdal platform and seal them safely and permanently. May 2014 is an ambitious deadline for the project. STREICHER Drilling Technology’s engineers are banking on their experience in the development, construction and assembly of the VDD 400.1. They are working at the Deggenau location in very close technical co-operation with several of their customer - ARCHERs - employees, who are involved on site on the STREICHER Group’s drilling rig test site for the entire period from the design to the acceptance of the system.
