Disturbing figures on asbestos severity broken down in new infographic

(firmenpresse) - CHESTERFIELD, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwired) -- 04/05/13 -- Asbestos now kills nearly four times as many teachers in the UK than in the 1980s. This is just one of the harrowing statistics to come out of Spencers Solicitors research into the killer disease.

In support of International Asbestos Awareness Week (1-7 April) Spencers has released an to visualise the severity of the asbestos threat in Britain's schools. It's the latest effort from the law firm that is determined to push the issue higher up the political agenda and see justice for innocent victims.

With mesothelioma, a form of cancer directly related to asbestos, more than twice as prevalent in the UK than in France, Germany or the United States, the on-going Spencers campaign is aimed at helping to drive the killer disease from British schools.

John Spencer, Director of the , commented:

"Imagine a teacher was murdered every month in the classroom - it would be considered a national atrocity and the government would be forced to answer. Yet, because the deaths are caused by asbestos, the issue is overlooked.

"Asbestos is a killer and a very real threat in the UK. Hopefully, this infographic will help more teachers and parents understand just how serious it is. We all have a right to know what dangers are behind our school walls."

Meanwhile, has supported the work of Mr Michael Lees, who recently submitted evidence of asbestos in schools to the Houses of Commons Education Select Committee. Mr Lees' actions were driven by the death of his wife Gina, a 51 year old primary school teacher who fell victim to mesothelioma in the year 2000.

Spencers submitted a reinforced submission to the Committee to provide further evidence on the matter. Since then, the Education Committee has reviewed the evidence provided. John Spencer is now optimistic the Committee's findings will draw the long overdue attention from government officials:

"The sterling work of all involved in highlighting the continuing dangers posed by asbestos in schools is to be applauded. It is to be hoped that the government takes due stock of it, to the extent that a full inquiry is initiated in the very near future."
