"2013 Reasons to SchoolPool" Campaign Lessened Congestion Around Schools in South Florida

ID: 1213139

(firmenpresse) - FORT LAUDERDALE, FL -- (Marketwired) -- 04/03/13 -- In an effort to promote carpooling, biking or walking to school, South Florida Commuter Services (SFCS) worked with Broward, Palm Beach, Martin and St. Lucie County schools to promote "2013 Reasons to SchoolPool" Campaign. The campaign asked families to come up with reasons why carpooling, bicycling, and walking to school makes sense. Schools that met the requirements to participate were rewarded.

SchoolPool is a free service, administered by South Florida Commuter Services, for schools and families in Broward, Palm Beach, Martin, and St. Lucie counties designed to increase the number of families in local communities that carpool, bike, or walk to and from school. SFCS matches families that live close to one another, and who have children in the same schools. Those families receive the match lists and then, if they choose, set up their own school carpool, walking group or biking group. Currently, 23 schools have an active SchoolPool Program with SFCS at their campuses.

"This is an amazing program that helps build a culture that is environmentally conscious," said Sarah McCain, Green Team Committee Chair for Limestone Creek Elementary. "We had 300 students participate and based on our 'Cool Pool Day' experienced a 15% reduction in the amount of cars and congestion in the car line. We could have never done this without SFCS's help. Our goal is to become a First Level Green School this May."

The mission of the SchoolPool program is to reduce the number of cars dropping off students at schools, lessen congestion on the roadways in and around school zones and provide parents a way to save time and money. In order to be eligible to participate in the "2013 Reasons to SchoolPool" Campaign, schools agreed to distribute promotional material to all students; post information about the campaign via the school websites and newsletters; and post the reasons collected in main hallways, libraries or school cafeterias. As a result, ten schools have participated with over 8,000 reasons collected.

Interested families that want to participate or school administration that is interested in starting the program at their school are encouraged to visit or call Sabrina Glenn at 954/731-0062.
