This report has now been tabled in Parliament.
- The report, , is in response to incidents that occurred during the 41st general election of May 2, 2011, involving deceptive communications with electors.
- The purpose of the report is to examine preventive, compliance and enforcement measures that should be taken to deal with deceptive communications. While some of the measures proposed in the report are administrative, the majority require legislative change.
- The Canada Elections Act requires the Chief Electoral Officer, following a general election, to report on any amendments that, in his opinion, are desirable for the better administration of the Act.
- and are available on Elections Canada's website.
"Since May 2011, and even more specifically over the past year, thousands of Canadians have contacted my office to share their concerns about the deceptive communications tactics that were used during the last general election," said Mr. Mayrand. "The public reaction to those incidents clearly demonstrates the importance that Canadians attach to the integrity of their electoral process. Parliament, Elections Canada and all participants in the electoral process must work together to implement the changes necessary to prevent the recurrence of such tactics in the future."
