Beware of Potholes in 2013-Insurance Claims Set to Double
(firmenpresse) - LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwire) -- 03/22/13 -- Following severe weather conditions, the AA has expressed serious concerns over the deteriorating state of our roads. They say that unless the Government takes action to stem the resulting pothole epidemic, insurance claims will soar.
'Pothole damage is bad enough,' said Director of AA Insurance, Simon Douglas, 'but those making claims state that there has also been serious damage to suspension, steering and bodywork.'
According to AA Insurance, UK insurance claims relating to potholes has more than doubled since the beginning of January 2013, compared to the same period last year. It is estimated that as many as 2,000 cars have been seriously damaged by them this year.(1)
A survey of nearly 23,000 AA members also revealed that up to a third had been affected by potholes. All those reporting pothole damage had experienced tyre damage, while 17% also reported that the wheel had been affected.
'In some cases, the driver has lost control or swerved to avoid the pothole and hit something else,' said Mr Douglas. 'While it takes a quarry-like pothole to cause the sort of damage that would justify an insurance claim, there are certainly some 'A-listers' out there', he added.
If you're unfortunate enough to hit a pothole, the AA advises that damaged tyres be replaced immediately. If your steering wheel doesn't centre properly, get it checked straight away - it could be that your tracking is misaligned. Finally, watch out for any vibrations or steering 'pull' that might indicate damage to your steering or suspension.
When choosing insurance, consider that while most standard will take care of any problems, The AA say they'll come to your rescue as the passenger or driver of any car you're in.
