Waste Re-Imagined as Surfable 14 Foot Plastic Wave to Raise Clean Oceans Awareness
(firmenpresse) - SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 03/20/13 -- On Friday, the Dopper Foundation is inviting Bay Area residents to San Francisco's UN Plaza to surf a huge 14 foot plastic wave, made of 6,000 single-use plastic water bottles to help raise awareness about how everyone can contribute to cleaner oceans.

"Of the 6,000 single-use bottles tossed away, less than 20% is recycled," says Irene Rompa, co-founder Dopper US. "The rest goes to landfill and directly in our oceans where it forms an everlasting soup killing sea life."
Rompa and her team partnered with the San Francisco Department of Environment to put the wave together. The single-use plastic bottles used to build the wave were generously provided by recycling leader rated the 15th most sustainable company in the world at the World Economic Forum for the 5th year in a row.
"Bottled water has negative environmental impacts, which start with the extraction of resources, continue with transportation and packaging and finally they frequently end up in landfills or as litter on our streets or in our Bay," notes Melanie Nutter, director, San Francisco Department of the Environment. "Hetch Hetchy reservoir provides San Francisco with healthy, economical and tasty water that is readily available and a viable alternative to bottled water."
"UN Plaza is the ideal location for our World Water Day campaign," adds Rompa. The United Nations General Assembly established World Water Day in 1993 to highlight the challenges associated with water.
