German photographer Christian Zehe initiates anti-bullying photo project
(firmenpresse) - It is estimated, that on German schools there are 500.000 bullying assaults, daily. Some victims are harassed several times each day. It is also assumed that there is at least one bullying victim in each class. These numbers are frightening and make it very clear, that bullying is an important and current issue.
Fashion and advertising photographer Christian Zehe, who is specialized in kids photography, and also takes part in social projects in this field, saw these alarming figures and decided to turn this into a new photography project. Together with his agent Ivonne Kutzer, he developed the idea for a photo series titled „You victim! - Bullying among kids“.
The goal of the project is to attract attention and shaken up people. Therefore Christian Zehe chose a drastic overdrawn and abstract way of portrayal.
„The kids are shown in typical situations where bullying occurs. The particular feature is some make-up that serves as a masquerade,“ says Christian Zehe. „This is emphasized by a dark location, exaggerated facial expressions and gestures of the kids and - depending on the topic - overdone styling.“
Why this way of portrayal? There were two reasons for this. „On the one hand, we chose this abstract presentation in order to captivate people‘s attention and cause people to reflect on the topic. On the other hand, we wanted to protect the people whose story we represent as well as the models. We didn‘t want to suggest that we are showing real victims and offenders“, says Ivonne Kutzer, who was involved in the realization of the project.
A dark location for the first shooting was found quickly. In a dark practice room of a theater, five teenagers from Hamburg could take the roles of bullying victims and offenders, act out and show all their theatrical talent. This shooting was a valuable experience for the kids as well. Because, suddenly they realized, that none of them wanted to play the victim. They were forced to rethink their positions and had to take a closer look at the subject.
Hence, the shooting was a great experienced for everyone involved and everyone was very happy with the final results. The first part of the photo series can be found on the website of Christian Zehe at www.kinderzehe.de
He intends to continue the project with new photos and reconstructed bullying situations - even more so because of the currentness of the subject. We can look forward to it with excitement.
