(firmenpresse) - EDMONTON, ALBERTA -- (Marketwire) -- 03/12/13 -- Today, the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, together with James Rajotte, Member of Parliament for Edmonton-Leduc, announced support for six community infrastructure projects under the Harper Government's Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).

"Our Government is pleased today to announce support for so many excellent projects in Edmonton," said Minister Yelich. "Families and communities across the city will benefit from these initiatives, which will also boost economic activity, as well as leave a lasting legacy of modernized community facilities for future generations."

The Harper Government's investment of more than $210,000 will support improvements to six recreational facilities in Edmonton. These projects include upgrades to the Thistle Curling Club, Pleasantview Community League, Edmonton Ski Club, Alberta Avenue Community League, Fort Edmonton Park and the Edmonton Radial Railway Society. These investments will rehabilitate and improve existing community infrastructure in various communities throughout the city.

"I am proud to see Edmonton benefit from the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund," said MP Rajotte. "By improving facilities such as these, we are maintaining a high quality of life for residents, and supporting the prosperity of the communities for years to come."

In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced further support to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure. Our Government committed $150 million over two years for the Fund. The Fund supports projects that look to improve existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, cultural and other community facilities.

Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating small- and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
