The Eminata Group has signed a partnership agreement with the Beijing Multimedia Industry Association (BMIA), China's largest multimedia industry organization, to design a program that's expected to bring a large number of Chinese multimedia and new media students to Canada. The multimedia program will include language training, technology training and a Canadian work experience opportunity.

According to Statistics Canada, the average international student in BC spends approximately $29,705 on tuition and living expenses. Successful delivery of the new program could inject an estimated $10 million annually to the economy of British Columbia.

The project began with the assistance of BC Film and Media, which had sought out ways to build an environment for cross-cultural opportunities for young people in both countries. Believing that these opportunities should start at the educational level, BC Film and Media Chair Michael Francis met with BMIA during visits to Beijing. Overseeing the training for more than 3,000 students in the Beijing region, the association wished to form global educational networking platform for multimedia, internet and digital media creators.

Working with the BC Trade and Investment Representative Office in Beijing, a business plan was developed to provide educational opportunities in Canada for Chinese creators of media products.

"It did not take long to conclude that BMIA needed to be connected with an institute that not only possesses a global presence, but also has fluidity to adapt to different program needs," says Francis, about introducing BMIA to the Eminata Group.

The organizations signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in July 2012. After a visit from Secretary General Xiaofeng Zhang and Deputy Secretary-General Tony He in February 2013, the Eminata Group and BMIA drafted a proposal of what the program hopes to achieve. The final agreement was signed on March 4, 2013.

"This project is invaluable not only in that it warrants great economic value to the province of British Columbia, but also in that it showcases how two nations can work collaboratively to change the lives of many through education," says Dr. Bohdan Bilan, VP of Academics and Regulatory Affairs for the Eminata Group.

Recognizing the great potential and promising prospects of the project, Secretary General Zhang is confident that at least 300 - 400 students each year will enroll in the program.
