U.S.English Commends Introduction of English Language Bill in U.S. Congress
(firmenpresse) - WASHINGTON, DC -- (Marketwire) -- 03/07/13 -- U.S.English Chairman Mauro E. Mujica today commended Iowa Representative Steve King and Oklahoma Senator Jim Inhofe on the introduction of legislation to declare English the official language of the United States.
"The English language is the one factor that has the ability to unite all residents of the United States in our diversity," Chairman Mujica said. "Declaring English the official language of the federal government will add an incentive for all non-English speakers to become proficient in the common language of this nation, allowing them to rise up to a level playing field with American-born citizens and have equal opportunity to achieve the American dream."
At the time of the bill introductions, the English Language Unity Act already boasted the support of 2 cosponsors in the Senate (S. 464) and 35 cosponsors in the House of Representatives (H.R. 997). In the 112th Congress, the House version gained 122 cosponsors and received a hearing in the House Subcommittee on the Constitution.
"Now, more than ever, the U.S. Congress should support an individual's right to use whatever language he or she chooses, while also sending the message that in the United States, being proficient in English is essential to social and economic success. The English Language Unity Act sends this message, and I commend Senator Inhofe and Representative King on their leadership. It is now time for Congress to act in support of this unifying bill," Chairman Mujica continued.
H.R. 997 has been referred to the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, as well as the House Committee on the Judiciary, for further consideration. S. 464 has been referred to the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs where it awaits further action.
U.S.English, Inc. is the nation's oldest and largest non-partisan citizens' action group dedicated to preserving the unifying role of the English language in the United States. Founded in 1983 by the late Sen. S.I. Hayakawa of California, U.S.English, Inc. () now has more than 1.8 million members.
