Transatomic Power Adds Atomic Technology Leaders to Advisory Board
Company Wins 'Future Energy Investor Feedback Forum' at the 2013 ARPA-E Energy Innovation Summit
(firmenpresse) - CAMBRIDGE, MA -- (Marketwire) -- 02/26/13 -- From the ARPA-E Energy Innovation Summit, , developers of safe and , announced today that four industry veterans have joined its Technical Advisory Board:
Dr. Todd Allen, Deputy Director at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL);
Dr. Ken Czerwinski, Director of the University of Las Vegas (UNLV) Radiochemistry Program;
Dr. Michael Corradini, Wisconsin Distinguished Professor of Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison; and
Dr. Regis Matzie, former Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for Westinghouse Electric Company.
The new members are joining a that was already impressive. From its inception, Transatomic Power has been advised by Dr. Richard Lester, Head of the Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT); Dr. Ben Forget, current Chair of the Reactor Physics Division of the American Nuclear Society and an Assistant Professor at MIT; and Dr. Jess Gehin, a Senior Program Manager at the Oak Ridge National Labs and Adjunct Associate Professor in the Nuclear Engineering Department at the University of Tennessee. Technical advisors serve in an individual capacity and not as representatives of their respective institutions.
Founded by MIT Ph.D. candidates Leslie Dewan and Mark Massie and former E Ink CEO Russ Wilcox, Transatomic Power has developed an that solves the three key concerns for traditional nuclear power -- safety, waste and cost. Based on the principle of dissolving uranium into salt, the Transatomic Power reactor avoids core meltdowns. A clean and complete burn allows the reactor to harvest energy from spent nuclear waste and run up to 30 times longer, cutting the high-level waste output of a typical power plant from 20 tons per year to less than four kilograms. The small size also promises faster construction at a lower cost and with a smaller footprint.
"Atomic energy is an abundant and reliable power source," said Russ Wilcox, CEO of Transatomic, "and Transatomic Power has a better way to harness it. We're very excited to welcome these four luminaries to our Advisory Board, and look forward to their contributions as we work to bring this important new technology to market."
"This is a chance to help the young people in our industry to re-imagine and re-invent the field. In this team I see the spirit of innovation that helped give birth to the industry at its start," said Dr. Allen, Deputy Director at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL). Previously he was Scientific Director for the Advanced Test Reactor National Scientific User Facility at INL, and Director, Center for Material Science of Nuclear Fuel, positions he held in conjunction with a faculty position in the Department of Engineering Physics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
"Transatomic Power's reactor is designed to burn spent nuclear fuel that would otherwise be stored for centuries," said Dr. Ken Czerwinski, "and that makes this a worthwhile project." Dr. Czerwinski obtained his Ph.D. in Nuclear Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley in 1992. He was a research scientist at the Institute for Radiochemistry in Munich and then a faculty member in Nuclear Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Since 2004 he has directed the University of Las Vegas (UNLV) Radiochemistry Program, the largest of its kind in the United States.
Dr. Michael Corradini is Wisconsin Distinguished Professor of Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, since 1981. He has been an Associate Dean in Engineering and Chair of the department of the last 16 years. He is the current President of the American Nuclear Society.
Dr. Regis Matzie was previously Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for Westinghouse Electric Company, responsible for all Westinghouse research and development undertakings and advanced nuclear plant development. His career has been devoted primarily to the development of advanced nuclear systems and advanced fuel cycles, and he is the author of more than 120 technical papers and reports on these subjects.
Transatomic Power made the announcement about its new Advisory Board members from the , where it was hand picked as one of eight finalists from more than 200 applicants on the basis of "potential to significantly transform our energy future with game-changing technology." Last night, the finalists were invited to pitch before a live audience and panel of investors, who voted Transatomic Power as the overall winner of the competition.
"Having the opportunity to pitch our idea to this esteemed audience was a thrill, and to have been named the overall winner tells us we are on the right path," said Wilcox.
