Government of Canada Protecting Regional Share of Federal Jobs

ID: 1198937

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 02/20/13 -- The Government of Canada remains committed to each province and territory retaining its share of federal public service jobs as it continues to balance fiscal discipline with economic growth and Canada's long-term prosperity.

As part of Economic Action Plan 2012, the Government announced plans to eliminate 19,200 public service positions over three years. New numbers released today underscore the Government's pledge to maintain the regional distribution of federal jobs.

Once the job reductions are fully implemented in March 2015, the National Capital Region will retain 32% of federal employees, compared to 32.4% prior to Economic Action Plan 2012. Ontario will remain unchanged at 16.7%, while the Atlantic provinces will see a slight increase from 12.4 to 12.6%.

"Our Government has said from the beginning that it would ensure that each province and territory is treated fairly," said the Honourable Tony Clement, President of the Treasury Board. "We said the regional representation of federal jobs would remain unchanged, and we are being true to our word."

In November 2012, the Government announced that 10,980 federal public service positions, out of the total of 19,200, had already been eliminated. Of those, 7,500 positions were reduced through attrition, including through retirement and reductions in term, casual and vacant positions. Another 1,220 individuals whose positions were eliminated found new placements.

"We are shrinking the size of government, while minimizing the impact on employees and the regions," said Minister Clement. "We will continue to work hard to reduce spending and find efficiencies in government operations. Our Government understands that reducing costs helps keep taxes and our debt low, which are critical to spurring growth and ensuring our long-term prosperity."
