Harper Government Creates Jobs and Improves Community Infrastructure in the Northwest Territories
(firmenpresse) - YELLOWKNIFE, NORTHWEST TERRITORIES -- (Marketwire) -- 02/19/13 -- Today, the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor), and Minister for the Arctic Council, announced federal funding for two projects in the Northwest Territories that will help improve community infrastructure.
"Our Government is proud to contribute to projects that will help create sustainable, healthy and prosperous northern communities," said Minister Aglukkaq. "In collaboration with our partners, this investment will improve the community infrastructure and create jobs for Northerners."
Federal funding of $1 million is being provided for two separate projects through the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF). The two projects are: the Children's First Centre in Inuvik and the Khon Go Cho Complex in Behchoko. The Children's First Centre combines four early childhood centres in Inuvik, providing 120 childcare spaces. The Khon Go Cho Complex is being renovated and upgraded to provide sports and recreation facilities to the community and will serve as the prime community gathering place.

"This funding reflects a sensitivity and responsiveness by the Government of Canada, to the infrastructure needs and somewhat unique circumstances of Behchoko," said Chief Clifford Daniels. "That is key in rejuvenating an otherwise dormant facility, into a symbol of hope and health for the Tlicho people. This day marks the start of a very exciting year as we move forward in finalizing the detailed design and starting construction."
This CIIF funding is in addition to previously announced funding of more than $1.1 million for five projects in the NWT: Yellowknife's Northern Frontier Visitors Centre; Tuktoyaktuk's Kitti Hall; the Father Leonce DeHurtevant Arena in Paulatuk; the historic Tl'oondih Lodge in Fort McPherson; and the swimming pool in Fort Simpson.
Investment is made possible through the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF), a national program delivered across Canada over two years to rehabilitate or improve community infrastructure. The CIIF will help to achieve the Government of Canada's priorities to promote long-term growth and prosperity in Canada's economy, create jobs; and improve the quality of life of communities.
CanNor is delivering CIIF in Nunavut, the Northwest Territories and Yukon.
