International Center for Alcohol Policies Hosting February 20 Summit at European Parliament

(firmenpresse) - BRUSSELS, BELGIUM -- (Marketwire) -- 02/14/13 --

Black market alcohol poses a serious and growing threat in a number of regions within the European Union and represents significant economic challenges for governments as well. Complex socioeconomic conditions and restrictive government policies can contribute to the growth of the illicit alcohol market and its negative public health impacts.

This seminar, hosted by the International Center for Alcohol Policies (ICAP), will explore research out of Estonia, Latvia and Poland focused on the illicit market's national impacts as well as cross-border implications across the EU.

Developing smart policies and interventions around noncommercial alcohol will require improved enforcement, new approaches, and the engagement of a range of stakeholders.

The event will feature opening remarks by MEP Dr. Renate Sommer and four expert speakers:

Dr. Marjana Martinic, Deputy President, International Center for Alcohol Policies
Noncommercial Alcohol: The Bigger Picture

Maret Maripuu, Member of the Estonian Parliament
Unrecorded Alcohol Market: A Challenge for Policies. The Case of Estonia

Valters Ka?e, Board Member of LADRIA (Latvian Association of Spirits Producers and Distributors); Research Project Leader, University of Latvia
A Threat for the Latvian Alcohol Market: The Social and Economic Impact of the Noncommercial Alcohol Market in Latvia
