(firmenpresse) - ACCRA, GHANA -- (Marketwire) -- 01/31/13 -- Agricultural production and access to nutritious food in developing countries will be improved by creating clearer, more predictable forms of land ownership in rural areas, and modernizing land services. The Honourable Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade, made the announcement on behalf of the Honourable Julian Fantino, Minister of International Cooperation, during his visit to Accra, as part of a recent trade mission to Ghana.

"Canada will support Ghana in the administration and management of natural resources, with a particular focus on issues around land ownership," said Minister Fast. "This will help Ghana improve food security and contribute to the country's overall economic growth and development."

"This announcement is further proof of how deepening our relationship with Ghana is a win-win for both our countries," added Minister Fast. "Canadian investment can help anchor and expand Ghana's reforms, which in turn will create jobs, economic growth and long-term prosperity for people in both countries. Our government and Canadian businesses will continue to play a significant role in contributing to Africa's continued growth and economic development."

With Canada's support, the regions of Northern Ghana will be addressing deficiencies in the legislation and the administration of land use, to increase economic possibilities and access to appropriate and nutritious food for the people of Ghana. Through this project, Canada will be assisting Ghana to improve business centres for land services, as well as develop new surveys and means of mapping land. This investment will also provide technical support and training for Ghanaian officials working on land administration, and support the development of a human resources plan, as part of the technical support and training programs for the Lands Commission and other land services agencies. The World Bank will implement this project between now and 2017.
