A century of cranesational technology – WOLFFKRAN celebrates 100 years of tower cranes
Munich – January 2013. In 1913 Julius Wolff & Co. presented the world’s first fast-assembly mobile tower crane at the Leipzig Trade Fair – a sensation that revolutionized the construction machinery market. A century later WOLFFKRAN still leads the technological development on the crane market. A unique success story that WOLFFKRAN will celebrate at this year’s bauma.
(firmenpresse) - At the time praised by the press as a “phenomenal construction”, the fast-assembly tower crane is nowadays an indispensable element of every construction project. Whereas at the beginning of the 20th century workers still needed almost two weeks for the assembly, a tower crane can today be erected within a day.
With the rise of the construction boom as a result of the industrialization, there was a demand for more flexible cranes that could be erected more quickly. The new tower crane, designed by WOLFF’s Chief Engineer Gottlob Göbel, can be assembled in only four days instead of fourteen. In addition, it is equipped with a movable, top-slewing luffing jib – likewise a novelty in the industry. The new development was honored as a “technical masterpiece for the glory of the fatherland” at the Leipzig Trade Fair and was met with great enthusiasm on a national and international level.
Leader of the pack from the start – WOLFFKRAN as a technological pioneer
While the red WOLFF cranes were initially manufactured by Julius Wolff & Co. individually and to order only, they went into serial production in the mid-1920s. Further technical milestones were to follow: in 1928 WOLFFKRAN brought the first modern trolley jib tower crane with electric trolley gear onto the market. In the 1980s and 90s the company introduced the frequency controlled drive and frequency controlled slewing gear as standard, both in-house developments of the WOLFF engineers. In the mid-1990s WOLFFKRAN was the first manufacturer to unveil the electronically controlled horizontal load path (level luffing). In 1996 the electronic data monitoring system, today known as WOLFF-Link, was introduced to the market.
In the 21st century the engineers in Heilbronn most notably set highlights in the design of tower cranes: in the early 2000s WOLFFKRAN developed more compact designs and in 2007 it unveiled the 355 B with a patented subdivided design. The launch of the BIG WOLFF 1250 B in 2009 and the innovative WOLFF 166 B with a hydraulic luffing system in 2012 attracted further international attention.
In the past 100 years of tower crane technology WOLFFKRAN has thus been among the pioneers in technology development and innovation.
The WOLFF trademark – what makes the WOLFF the leader of the pack
One of the major pioneering achievements: WOLFFKRAN made crane design modular. In the 1960s the Heilbronn-based company was the first to design the flexible, climbable tower system, which together with the ground-breaking, assemble-friendly slug bolt connections belongs to the trademark of the red WOLFF cranes.
The towers are not assigned to a single crane type, but are compatible with one another and can be combined with each other. For customers this means secure investments. The modular system enables them to individually assemble their cranes or fleet of cranes to suit their needs and as economically viable.
All you need is… WOLFF
From the former customized cranes for special construction projects, such as dams, bridges and harbor installations, WOLFFKRAN has developed a broad product portfolio and today manufactures a total of 30 different luffing and trolley jib tower cranes that can be used for almost every construction project, from skyscrapers to wind turbines. The current 100mt to 1500mt range is being steadily expanded in response to the demands of the market. According to the motto: All you need is… WOLFF the premium manufacturer offers each of its sales and rental customers the most suitable crane, from S to XXL.
Viable business model, long-term customer relations
The WOLFFKRAN customer base is now equally as extensive as its product range. Due to the unique modular design of the WOLFF cranes, customer relations at WOLFFKRAN are geared to the long term. Once they have been acquired, modules can be combined in a variety of different ways; older elements can still be used today.
Supplementary parts can be purchased or rented from WOLFFKRAN at any time.
Besides WOLFFKRAN’s pioneering technology, it is precisely this future-oriented business model that has led major international crane rental companies, as well as medium-sized enterprises and customers with special projects to place their trust in the product diversity and innovation capability from Heilbronn. “Already the company’s founders attached great importance to customer-focused, uncomplicated solutions. Subsequent generations have consistently pursued this strategy and built up a market leadership,” says Dr Peter Schiefer, who has been managing WOLFFKRAN’s business for the past eight years. “We are proud of our history and are consistently investing in future innovations and advanced technology to consolidate our position as technology leader in the next 100 years and beyond.”
