New cultural attraction for Croatia and Zagreb coming in 2007

ID: 119

(firmenpresse) - With the moving into the new Museum building planned for 2007, the Museum's permanent art collection will be presented to the public.

MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART COLLECTIONS

The process of forming the Museum collections was started immediately following the founding of the then City Contemporary Art Gallery in 1954, today's Museum of Contemporary Art.
The largest part of the Museum's contemporary art collection consists of works by both Croatian and foreign authors created after 1950, while a smaller part is comprised of pieces dating back to the first half of the 20th c. and whose presence is essential for grasping the concept of both modern and contemporary art. The Museum also houses various donations, such as the comprehensive and heterogeneous art collection of Benko Horvat, the complex surrealist opus of the painter Josip Seissel (Silvana Seissel Donation), and the special collection of architect Vjenceslav Richter that is kept in his house.
Many of the works from the International Art Collection belong to the international movement New Tendencies. As an international manifestation, the movement took place between 1961-1973 at the Contemporary Art Gallery, thus confirming Zagreb as one of the most interesting European art centers of the 60s. In five manifestations the Gallery gathered many outstanding artists (Vasarely, Soto, Le Parc, Piene, Alviani, Biasi), including art critics and theoreticians, among them Abraham Moles and Umberto Eco.
The collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art today include around 9,000 works of both modern and contemporary art, works by local and foreign authors, which shall finally become available to the general public once the new Museum building is built.

THE NEW MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART BUILDING

Following long-standing attempts to situate the Museum in a suitable space, whether through adapting the existing space or moving to a new building, in 1998 it was decided to build a brand new museum in the new part of Zagreb. Following an open competition at the national level, the concept designed by the young architect, Igor Franić was selected as the best and most appropriate. A new Museum building in New Zagreb has been under construction since 2003. This is the first museum being built in Zagreb after 125 years and at the same time, Museum will be the most contemporary Croatian museum. The project of New Museum is the biggest cultural investment since the Croatia achieved independence in 1991. The move to the new building of the Museum of Contemporary Art is scheduled for the second half of 2007.

Respecting the tradition of rational, functionalistic architecture, Igor Franić has designed a building that stretches north-south, and taking up a total surface area of some 14 500 square meters, of which 4 800 are foreseen for the exhibition spaces. The north side of the Museum building, turned towards the Lake Bundek forest, is envisaged for outdoor exhibitions. This geometrically divided volume with its five floors, adjustable sections, whose form is reminiscent of a meander, is expected to become a recognizable emblem of the city in the near future.
The subterranean level contains spaces for the reception of art works, an audiovisual studio, and accessory spaces for technical services and restoration workshops which are situated in the inner glassed courtyard in order to receive as much natural light as possible. The ground floor is dedicated entirely to a various contents for visitors – entryway, Museum shop, children's workshops, a library with reading room, smaller exhibition space, a restaurant and multimedia halls. The exhibition spaces located on the floors above are accessed by ramps, and the restaurant extends through to all the levels so that it is possible to use it for exhibition openings on other floors. The exhibit areas comprise a wing for special exhibitions and a wing for a permanent exhibition. All the spaces are designed to be quite functional. Architect Igor Franić has created neutral spaces - smaller, larger and medium-sized halls - which can be used independently, simultaneously, or combined. Spaces which give way to the enlarging, reducing and interweaving of the permanent display and the space of the temporary exhibitions, and which offer different possibilities for exhibiting the most diverse materials (the smaller darker spaces for video, the higher spaces for large and heavy sculptures, etc.). The covered walk-ways will be able to play host to a number of activities; the restaurant will also be a public attraction, and the multipurpose auditorium will have a separate entrance. Viewed in the whole, this project design, with its vast covered spaces and walkways, will permit intense intermingling between civic life and the museum. http://www.msu.hr/index_e.htm
