(firmenpresse) - SURREY, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- (Marketwire) -- 01/22/13 -- Across the country, community centres, cultural centres, hockey rinks, swimming pools, and other community projects will soon be improved thanks to support from the Harper Government's Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).

As part of the Government's Economic Action Plan 2012, the Honourable Steven Fletcher, Minister of State for Transport, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced federal funding for the Bridgeview Community Centre project under the Fund.

"Facilities like the Bridgeview Community Centre play a special role in communities all across Canada," said Minister Fletcher. "Community centres provide a place for communities to come together while also providing jobs for residents in that community. Through this investment our Government is delivering on its promise to support local economies and job creation throughout Canada, including here in Surrey."

Federal funding of $249,787 will support the Bridgeview Community Centre project. The project will modernize the building's exterior with sustainable siding materials and a rainscreen system, as well as install energy efficient lighting and windows. The City will also upgrade the washrooms at the Centre to meet provincial building code standards, making the facility accessible for people of all abilities.

"We are pleased to partner with the federal government to upgrade the Bridgeview Community Centre to enhance and modernize the space, as well as improve the efficiency of the building," said Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts. She added that the City of Surrey is contributing $684,213 to the project.

In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced further support to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure. Our Government committed $150 million over two years for the Fund. The Fund supports projects that look to improve existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, cultural and other community facilities.
