Harper Government Invests in Improvements to Kelowna's Community Infrastructure
(firmenpresse) - KELOWNA, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- (Marketwire) -- 01/15/13 -- Today, the Honourable Ron Cannan, Member of Parliament for Kelowna-Lake Country, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced support for the Kelowna Family YMCA under the Harper Government's Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).
"I am very happy that Kelowna is benefitting from the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund," said MP Cannan. "With today's investment, we are improving a local facility and boosting economic activity in the area."
With over $250,000 in federal funding, the City of Kelowna will provide an additional $600,000 to restore the facility's structure and make upgrades to the change rooms. This will help create jobs in the region, while improving the overall safety of the building.
"We are pleased to partner with the Federal Government on this project," said Mayor Walter Gray. "As we work to be the best mid-sized city in North America, investing in our facilities infrastructure helps to ensure that our community has access to recreational opportunities which allow them to get active and stay active."
The improvements at the Kelowna Family Y are scheduled to take place over four months beginning this spring; however, the facility will remain open to members and users during the upgrade.
In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced further support to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure. Our Government committed $150 million over two years for the Fund. The Fund supports projects that look to improve existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, cultural and other community facilities.
