Government of Canada Invests in Research-Driven Knowledge Economy
(firmenpresse) - BURNABY, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- (Marketwire) -- 01/15/13 -- Canada's university campuses, research centres and hospitals are receiving funding from the Government of Canada for advanced research infrastructure, helping them continue to compete in today's global knowledge economy.
While visiting Simon Fraser University, the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages and Member of Parliament for Port Moody-Westwood-Port Coquitlam, announced an investment of over $215 million by the Government of Canada through the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) for cutting-edge research infrastructure.
"Our government is committed to investing in science and technology to contribute to the creation of a stronger, more innovative economy and a more prosperous Canada," said Minister Moore. "We understand that Canada's research enterprise is critical to economic growth and job creation, and this announcement reinforces our government's commitment to bolstering the country's research success."
Through the CFI's Leading Edge Fund (LEF) and New Initiatives Funds (NIF), the Government of Canada is supporting 75 projects at 34 institutions across the country. Building on its legacy of supporting research excellence, the CFI presents LEF-NIF awards to projects that offer a tangible impact on Canada's society and economy.
The LEF enables institutions to enhance successful initiatives that had already received funding from the CFI. The NIF, on the other hand, focuses on new infrastructure projects that have the potential to lead to important scientific breakthroughs and benefits to Canadians.
"These research projects are forceful drivers of growth in their respective communities," said Gilles G. Patry, President and CEO of the CFI. "The beneficiaries of these awards are our research leaders and visionaries. They have an exciting opportunity to create real impact."
