(firmenpresse) - Jena, January 14th, 2013 - Every year, the Spanish publication "Diario Médico" awards the work of specialists, institutions and companies from the field of medicine and healthcare. This year, the prize for the "Best Medical Idea 2012" is awarded to Dr. Arjona and his team from the hospital Reina Sofia in Cordoba, Spain. The publication honours Dr. Arjona"s contribution to the treatment of myomas with HoLATM, a new treatment method by biolitec®.
HoLATM (Hysteroscopic Outpatient Laser Applications) is a new minimally invasive method for the excision of myomas. Myomas are often appearing benign tumours of the uterus, by which appr. every fourth or sixth woman of productive age is affected in Europe. Even though myomas in some cases evoke no symptoms, heavy bleedings as well as pain and disturbance in function of organs (amongst others) can appear. Up to now, myomas are usually removed during a surgical or radiologic procedure.
The Reina Sofia is the first clinic which applies this groundbreaking laser technology. Up to now, more than forty women have benefitted from the method"s advantages. The patient does not undergo conventional surgery, and as the treatment can be performed on an outpatient basis, no hospital stay is necessary, and the patient can quickly return to her everyday activities.
At Reina Sofia, the HoLATM-method of biolitec® is applied for the treatment of submucosal myomas which are located directly under the endometrium and can grow into the uterine cavity. Though relatively scarce, this type of myomas can cause serious problems such as bleeding disorders up to an anaemia, and, from a certain size on, labour-like contraction pain.
The new HOLATM-therapy of biolitec® removes myomas of the uterus minimally invasive and with little side effects. A special designed tip of the laser fibre enables contact vaporization of the myoma tissue. Thereby, the feeding artery is closed with a radial emitting laser fibre, and no foreign substances are needed. The hysteroscopic vaporesection does not have any impact on the lining muscle and enables treatment of even bigger myomas.
The award presentation took place at the Catalan National Theatre in Barcelona. The medical publication "Diario Médico", which appears nationwide on a daily basis, addresses to doctors, nurses and further health care professionals.
