Education Portal Increases Commitment to Education Accessibility With EDU Accelerator Program in 2012
EDU Accelerator Program Has Provided $40,000 in Scholarships and Donations in 2012
(firmenpresse) - MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 01/10/13 -- Education Portal, a Silicon Valley start-up that develops free online courses that lead to real college credit, announced that its EDU Accelerator Program has provided over $40,000 in scholarships and donations throughout the year with the purpose of expanding access to education around the world.
"As a provider of free online education, we feel that it is our responsibility to support students, and other educational organizations that pursue the same mission," said Jessica Bayliss, director of education for Education Portal. "Through our EDU Accelerator Program, we hope to make an impact on students who strive to complete their education without incurring additional debt, as well as provide much-needed visibility and funding for deserving organizations."
Education Portal promoted education accessibility through a variety of charitable programs and scholarships in 2012. These efforts include:
- Education Portal awarded $5000 to educators at the K-12 and post-secondary level.
- Education Portal gave over $10,000 in scholarship money to students who used their free online courses to earn college credit by passing the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) exam.
- Education Portal awarded over $25,000 in academic scholarships to deserving students in 2012.
- Each month, Education Portal awarded $500 to one education-focused organization that shares its mission of increasing education accessibility. At the end of the year, all organizations were nominated for EDU Accelerator of the Year. The winner was decided by popular vote and will receive a $1000 donation from Education Portal.
The winner of Education Portal's first-ever EDU Accelerator of the Year award is , an Arizona-based organization dedicated to improving children's literacy. Said one voter, "After years of K-12 public education budget cuts in Arizona, our classrooms are left with very little support and/or funding to meet the needs of our struggling and emergent readers. The dedicated team of Reading Seed volunteers has been so gracious and wonderful with our school's students, introducing them to the love of reading with encouragement and care."
