(firmenpresse) - SPROAT LAKE, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- (Marketwire) -- 12/19/12 -- Today, Dr. James Lunney, Member of Parliament for Nanaimo-Alberni, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced federal funding for upgrades to the tennis court and baseball field at Cougar Smith Community Park in Sproat Lake under the Harper Government's Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).

"By improving facilities such as this, we are helping to boost economic activity while enhancing our community assets," said Dr. Lunney. "With today's investment, our Government is demonstrating our commitment to creating jobs, growth and long-term economic prosperity."

With $35,000 in federal funding, the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District will remove problematic tree roots, resurface the tennis courts, install an irrigation system, and grade and reseed the baseball field. The Regional District will also repave the entry path for wheel chair accessibility to the courts and ball field. Not only will these new components replace aging ones, but they will increase safety for users and allow persons of all abilities to access the facilities.

"The Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District and the Sproat Lake Parks Commission would like to sincerely thank the Government of Canada for this funding," stated Cindy Solda, Chair of the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District. "Improving the infrastructure at Cougar Smith Park help will provide a safer and greener local recreational venue for community residents and visitors of all ages and abilities. This will allow local teams and individuals to utilize the improved field and tennis court for sporting events and personal health within the community."

CIIF supports, on a cost-shared basis, repairs and improvements to existing community infrastructure accessible to the public. Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) is delivering the Fund in Western Canada with an allocation of $46.2 million over two years.
