Once a patient recognizes the presence of cataracts, there are a handful of surgical and non-surgical options. Non-surgical options include updating the patients' glasses or contact lens prescription, but Dr. Boyd says these options usually only benefit those patients with a mild cataract. For more serious cases, cataract surgery removes the cataract (a cloudy, opacified, natural lens) and replaces it with a clear intraocular lens. Dr. Boyd and Dr. Liss offer two varieties of cataract surgery -- premium and traditional IOLs (intraocular lens implants).
A traditional IOL will correct vision at one distance but does not correct for other eye conditions, such as astigmatism. incorporates advanced technology implants that can correct multiple eye conditions at once. A TORIC IOL can correct astigmatism and a multifocal IOL can correct distance and near vision simultaneously. An accommodating implant can mimic the eye's natural focusing mechanism. These IOLs can be mixed and matched to tailor procedures for individual patient needs. Dr. Boyd says traditional IOLs are usually covered by insurance whereas premium IOLs often involve an out-of-pocket expense for the patient.
In regard to the need for glasses after surgery, the results will vary from patient to patient. A patient with little astigmatism who selects multifocal IOLs might be totally free of glasses whereas a patient with significant astigmatism who selects a standard IOL will have the cataract removed during surgery but may still be dependent on glasses for distance or near vision. While discussing post-procedure expectations for patients, Dr. Liss says, "Multifocal lenses are designed to reduce a patient's dependency on distance and reading glasses, enabling most activities to be performed without glasses." The recovery time for cataract surgery is usually very brief. Vision is often improved the very next day, but the suggest waiting four weeks for the final vision recovery to become stable.
