Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy Estimated to Affect More Than 10 Million Americans

(firmenpresse) - BETHESDA, MD -- (Marketwire) -- 12/18/12 -- The American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA), the nation's leading professional organization for podiatrists, and Neuropathy Action Foundation (NAF), the premier patient advocacy organization for neuropathy education, have joined together to produce an educational video focusing on diabetic peripheral neuropathy featuring celebrity Jerry Mathers from the hit sitcom "Leave It to Beaver."

Neuropathy means "disease of the nerves" and causes tingling or numbness in certain areas of the body, especially the hands and feet. Diabetes is one of the most common causes of peripheral neuropathy. Knowing the signs and symptoms, and seeking expert medical attention from a podiatrist when the feet are affected, can alleviate the pain and/or numbness associated with neuropathy.

Jerry Mathers explains in the video that he has been diagnosed with diabetic peripheral neuropathy, but proactively monitoring blood glucose levels, following medication therapies, and seeking care by a podiatrist has worked for him.

APMA recommends those with diabetes make at least two appointments a year with today's podiatrist, the foot and ankle expert, in order to successfully manage diabetic foot complications like neuropathy.

The American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) is the nation's leading professional organization for today's podiatrists. Doctors of Podiatric Medicine (DPMs) are qualified by their education, training, and experience to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the foot, ankle, and structures of the leg. APMA has 53 state component locations across the United States and its territories, with a membership of more than 12,000 podiatrists. All practicing APMA members are licensed by the state in which they practice podiatric medicine. For more information, visit .

The Neuropathy Action Foundation (NAF) is dedicated to ensuring neuropathy patients obtain the necessary resources, information and tools to access individualized treatment to improve their quality of life. The NAF increases awareness among physicians, appropriate institutions, the general public and public policy officials that neuropathy can potentially be a serious, widespread and disabling condition, which may be treatable when appropriate medical care is provided.
