Harper Government Invests in Improvements to Richmond's Community Infrastructure
(firmenpresse) - RICHMOND, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- (Marketwire) -- 12/18/12 -- Today, Kerry-Lynne Findlay, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice, and Member of Parliament for Delta-Richmond East, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced federal funding for the rehabilitation of the Britannia Heritage Shipyard Seine Net Loft, under the Harper Government's Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).
"I am proud to see Richmond benefit from our Government's investment in community infrastructure," said Parliamentary Secretary Findlay. "This investment will help create jobs and growth, and will support the prosperity of the community for years to come."
Federal funding of $250,000 will help restore and rehabilitate the Seine Net Loft, a historical building at the Britannia Heritage Shipyard National Historic Site. Project activities will include roof and exterior repair, electrical and seismic upgrades as well as the installation of life-safety equipment (exits and emergency lighting) and a sprinkler system. This project will improve the safety and accessibility of this important cultural centre and tourist destination.
"The restoration and rehabilitation of the Seine Net Loft is an important step in fulfilling our vision for the Britannia Heritage Shipyard to become a major destination for cultural and historical tourism," said Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie. "Britannia is a unique and unparalleled heritage area, which has been designated as a National Historic Site. On this eight-acre site are numerous historic buildings that tell the history of the West Coast fishing industry and our maritime heritage, which are important elements in the evolution of our nation our province and our community."
CIIF supports, on a cost-shared basis, repairs and improvements to existing community infrastructure accessible to the public. Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) is delivering the Fund in Western Canada with an allocation of $46.2 million over two years.
