Minister Toews Announces Re-Appointment of Ian McPhail as Interim Chair of the Commission for Public Complaints Against the RCMP

ID: 1180658

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 12/14/12 -- The Honourable Vic Toews, Canada's Minister of Public Safety, today announced the re-appointment of Mr. Ian McPhail as Vice Chair and Interim Chair of the Commission for Public Complaints Against the RCMP (CPC) for a period of six months.

"I am pleased that Mr. McPhail has agreed to continue in his roles as Vice Chair and Interim Chair of the Commission for Public Complaints Against the RCMP during this important transition period," said Minister Toews. "Over the years the CPC has helped strengthen the RCMP's accountability to Canadians and Mr. McPhail's experience will be an asset as Canada's national police force continues to evolve."

The Commission for Public Complaints Against the RCMP is an independent agency created by Parliament that ensures complaints made by the public about the conduct of RCMP members are examined fairly and impartially. In June 2012, the Government of Canada introduced Bill C-42, the Enhancing Royal Canadian Mounted Police Accountability Act. This legislation, which is still being debated in the House of Commons, seeks to replace the CPC with a modern and independent Civilian Review and Complaints Commission for the RCMP (CRCC).

"The enhanced powers and authorities of the CRCC will increase the RCMP's accountability to Canadians," said Minister Toews. "Mr. McPhail will continue to play a crucial role in the transition to a new independent review body and the transformation of the RCMP into a stronger and more modern organization."
