ID: 1176511

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 12/03/12 -- The Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety, and Candice Bergen, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Public Safety, today released the following statements about the latest meeting of the (CCRS), where migration-related issues were discussed:

"Over the weekend, my colleague, Candice Bergen and officials met with the Cross-Cultural Roundtable on Security to focus on safety and security matters relating to migration," said Minister Toews. "This open and honest dialogue between members of the Roundtable and departments and agencies responsible for national security is vital to our ongoing work to improve immigration legislation and programs, and to enhance the safety and security of Canadians."

"Canada continues to have one of the most generous immigration and refugee programs in the world," said Parliamentary Secretary Bergen. "Successful meetings such as these demonstrate that the CCRS continues to play an important role in advising our Government on the impact of national security matters on Canada's diverse society."

Established in 2005, the CCRS has provided a forum for prominent members from a number of Canada's cultural communities to meet with officials from Canadian government departments and agencies, in order to discuss policy and program issues related to national security. This is the third Roundtable meeting of the year; previous meetings discussed Canada-U.S. relations, as well as cyberspace. The CCRS also helps build understanding between Government and communities, and to identify any issues of shared concern. Together, the CCRS and the Government are building valuable relationships founded on trust and respect.
