New Archaeology-focused feed will bring Canadians face-to-face with Canadian history

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 11/29/12 -- Parks Canada is launching a new national Twitter feed that will focus on the work done by the Agency's underwater and terrestrial archaeological teams. Canadians and visitors from all over the world will be able to learn about the amazing places and artefacts Parks Canada archaeologists encounter, and follow them on their many adventures, directly from their computers or Smartphones.

"We're very excited to launch this new Twitter feed," said Andrew Campbell, Vice-President of External Relations and Visitor Experience at Parks Canada. "Over the past few years social media has played an increasingly significant role in our efforts to reach Canadians, engage with our visitors and also connect them with Canada's national treasures."

The new Twitter feed ((at)PCArchaeology) will bring forward interesting and little-known facts about the work done by Parks Canada archaeologists. Individuals who follow the account on Twitter will also get a behind-the-scenes view of the day-to-day work of Parks Canada archaeologists and will also know when the archaeologists embark on new adventures.

The launch of the new Twitter feed coincides with the 70th anniversary of a Second World War American PBY-5A Catalina aircraft foundering in the St. Lawrence. Parks Canada underwater archaeologists discovered the wreckage of the aircraft while conducting a research survey in May 2009, near the Mingan Archipelago National Park Reserve of Canada.

As part of the launch, Parks Canada is unveiling a short documentary about the discovery of the aircraft by Parks Canada archaeologists. This video features Parks Canada underwater archaeologists and members of the U.S. Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC) as well as first-hand testimonies from local residents who witnessed the actual plane sinking.

"We've seen the interest people have in our work, especially the recent Franklin Expedition, and it's very encouraging," said Marc-Andre Bernier, Chief Underwater Archaeologist at Parks Canada. "Now you'll be able to stay up to date on all our projects."

"We have so many artefacts from places that most people may never get to see," added TJ Hammer, Manager of Parks Canada's Terrestrial Archaeology. "This really allows us to tell stories, Canadian stories, some rarely explored up to this point."

Follow the new Parks Canada Archaeology feed at (at)PCArchaeology and in French at (at)PCArcheologie.

The new documentary can be viewed on Parks Canada's YouTube channel:
