Audi Urban Intelligent Assist (AUIA) Research Will Be on Display at LA Auto Show With Innovations Powered by Three Major California Universities

(firmenpresse) - HERNDON, VA -- (Marketwire) -- 11/28/12 -- The (AUIA) research initiative will showcase the technologies and approaches it is taking to make the challenges of navigating the chaotic roadways of the world's megacity less stressful, safer and more efficient a generation from now.

The AUIA research will be demonstrated through an interactive display at the Audi stand throughout the Los Angeles Auto Show, which opened today. The exhibit will highlight the advancements in predictive technology made by AUIA, harnessing the power of Big Data through algorithms, real time data, Human Machine Interface (HMI), advanced sensors, lidar/radar detections and other innovative approaches.

Throughout the Los Angeles Auto Show, the exhibit will demonstrate the Audi intention to develop connected car technologies that reduce congestion and improve safety. The research is also focused on providing information to motorists on the driving conditions that will confront them before they begin their journeys -- and along their routes -- each day.

AUIA is a project launched by AUDI AG and the Volkswagen Group Electronics Research Laboratory (ERL) in Silicon Valley. The three-year research initiative taps the expertise of three leading California engineering research universities: the University of Southern California, the University of California at Berkeley and the University of California at San Diego. The AUIA project is the latest in a series of university collaborations that Audi has formed to explore the frontiers of automotive technologies and electronics. The project continues to make strides in solving tomorrow's mobility challenges and developing technologies to provide motorists a stress-free commute.

"The goal of AUIA is to find connected car technologies that reduce congestion, improve safety and make urban driving less stressful, and truly take this information to the next level by applying it to day-to-day life on the road." said Malte Moeller, Project Manager, Audi AG.

At the Los Angeles Auto Show, the AUIA demonstrator exhibit will focus on two primary applications: and . The display will include interactive elements across six screens that allow visitors to explore how driving with predictive technology will enhance their day-to-day driving experience. A large main screen depicting a virtual city will illustrate the applications in action and demonstrate how the surrounding environment influences the vehicle.

Research teams at USC utilize urban information collected from multiple on and off board sources to predict how the city flows throughout the day. Used in combination with driver diagnostic information, AUIA applications generate the most comfortable and efficient route for each driver, offer recommendations about route planning, and provide route guidance tailor-made to each user to make each trip smart and stress-free. Driver Centric Urban Navigation applications that will be demonstrated include:

Using a mobile application, Time-2-Start will notify drivers via their mobile devices of how long it will take them to reach their destination before they embark on their journey.

Smart Parking helps to identity the parking habits of the driver. Based on the preferences of the driver, the system searches for a parking spot in the destination area and automatically provides navigation.

Predictive Traffic is able to predict and analyze the current traffic pattern based on actual traffic data, historical traffic data, weather data and events.

Predictive Destination is able to predict the destination a motorist is most likely to pick based on their driving history, appointments, key calendar dates and other data affecting their life schedules.

Naturalist Guidance uses surrounding landmarks to provide detailed instructions for easy navigation (e.g. "Please turn left by the gas station").

Seamless Navigation provides walking guidance to the driver from his/her "Smart Parking" spot directly to his/her destination.

Additionally, USC, in collaboration with UC San Diego and UC Berkeley PATH is developing Audi Urban Assistance. The research focuses on determining critical information in urban situations, such as vehicle and pedestrian detection for intersection safety, available parking spaces near a destination or the governing traffic rules at the time of arrival. Audi Urban Assistance applications that will be demonstrated include:

Merge Assist supports the driver while merging on the highway utilizing components of speed calculation, speed displayed in the instrument cluster and green LEDs on the side mirrors that notify the driver that it is safe to merge.

Lane Change Assist system monitors the blind spot areas, as well as fast-approaching vehicles and hazardous objects, to aid the driver in changing lanes on the highway. The system signals the driver when it is safe to change lanes via green LED lights on the side mirrors.

Attention Guard helps with the early detection of driver distraction with the introduction of countermeasures that get the attention of the driver and bring the focus back on the road.

Moderators will be on-site to provide demonstrations of the different initiatives. The AUIA exhibit will be on display throughout the Los Angeles Auto Show Press Days taking place November 28 - 29 and from November 30 - December 9 when the show opens to the public.
