(firmenpresse) - LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwire) -- 11/23/12 -- Czech archaeologists have made an exciting discovery in the deserts just outside Cairo with the unearthing of an , thought to date from around 2500 BC. Four limestone pillars with hieroglyphic inscriptions mark the entrance to the antechamber of Princess Shert Nebti's tomb. A passage was also discovered leading to two further chambers, believed to be the tombs of high-ranking officials.

October marks the beginning of excavation season, and this fascinating find will no doubt draw many to the Abu Sir region of Egypt, a prime destination for holidaymakers eager to learn about the country's past - from Cosmos often include convenient excursions to sites like the Pyramids and the temples at Luxor.

Egypt's ancient history is just one attraction of this vibrant country, and visits to bustling cities, modern museums and relaxing beaches should also feature in your itinerary. If the wintry weather in the UK is making you long for sun, sea and sand, why not start planning your break for next year?

Luxury resorts providing entertainment and activities for kids can make it tricky to tear yourself away from Egypt's beautiful beaches, but news of the discovery of the Princess Tomb should be enough to tempt any holidaymaker into the desert to discover another side to this fascinating country.

Overseeing the recent archaeological find is Mohammed El-Bialy, who heads the Egyptian and Greco-Roman Antiquities department at the Antiquities Ministry(1). El-Bialy has said that investigations are still ongoing, and the site at Abu Sir is currently closed to the public. The situation may have changed by the New Year, but if not, there are still plenty of other sites to check out in 2013.

Luxor, for example, is thought to contain a third of the world's most valuable monuments and antiquities, including the Temples of Luxor and Karnak and the Valley of the Kings. Visitors will likewise gape in awe at the Pyramids of Giza, the sole surviving example of the Seven Wonders of the World, which lie on a plateau to the south-west of Cairo.
