(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 11/16/12 -- This document corrects and replaces the press release that was sent today at 2:12 PM EST.

Hundreds of delegates from across the country gathered today at the Delta City Centre in Ottawa for the 93rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC). Today's discussions focused on the governments' ongoing cuts to programs and services that not only jeopardize the security and well-being of all Canadians, but also cause needless anxiety amongst affected public service employees and their families. They are left to face either an uncertain future outside the federal workforce or, for the "lucky ones" an overworked, hollowed-out work environment.

After hearing from noted mental health specialist Bill Wilkerson, who reviewed the stresses under which federal employees are currently labouring, the delegates gathered for a march on Parliament Hill, where they were joined by Canadian Labour Congress Secretary-Treasurer Hassan Yussuff, Robyn Benson and Larry Rousseau, respectively President and Vice-President of the Public Service Alliance of Canada, Ken Lewenza, President of the Canadian Auto Workers, and by Members of Parliament Mathieu Ravignat (Pontiac, NDP) and the Honourable Carolyn Bennett (St. Paul's, Liberal).

"The government's relentless assault on the public service puts the health and security of Canadians at risk" said PIPSC President Gary Corbett. "Food safety, environmental protection and sound budgeting are at the top of a very long list of casualties as evidence-based decision-making loses out to ideology."

"We will not stand on the sidelines as real damage is done to programs and services that Canadians depend on in communities right across this country," added Corbett.

Corbett concluded by calling on PIPSC members "to stand on guard" as part of "their duty to serve and protect Canadians."

The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada represents some 60,000 professionals and scientists across Canada's public sector.
