Minister of State Goodyear Lauds College Researchers and Polytechnics as Important Innovators
(firmenpresse) - EDMONTON, ALBERTA -- (Marketwire) -- 11/14/12 -- The Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State (Science and Technology), today emphasized the importance of applied research and innovation to Canada's economy and highlighted the Harper Government's commitment to achieving excellence in science and technology. Minister of State Goodyear delivered his remarks at Polytechnics Canada's Student Applied Research Showcase.
"Polytechnics Canada has made great strides in preparing students for the challenges and opportunities of the knowledge-based economy," said Minister of State Goodyear. "The Harper Government recognizes the important contributions colleges make to the country's innovation system."
The annual showcase, co-hosted this year by the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, spotlights successful applied research projects conducted by students of Polytechnics Canada's nine member institutions in support of industry innovation.
"Canada's colleges and polytechnics are an emerging force as innovation intermediaries, assisting small and medium-sized enterprises to bridge the commercialization gap and helping our world-leading university scientists realize the benefits of their research," said Polytechnics Canada CEO Nobina Robinson.
Since 2006, the Harper Government has invested nearly $8 billion in initiatives supporting science, technology and the growth of innovative firms in Canada, including $5 billion for advanced research, education and training; $2 billion for post-secondary infrastructure; and $1 billion for applied research and financing. This funding has helped to make Canada a world leader in post-secondary education research and to create the knowledge and highly skilled workforce that are required for a more prosperous economy.
